EDUCATION BUILDING PHOTOGRAPHY
Chris has undertaken a large number of schools photography projects along with university and college photography. Clients for these projects have ranged from the local authorities to the architects and developers / contractors.
Each shoot is tailored to the specific brief, whether that be to photograph a school empty to showcase the space, or to include students to bring spaces to life and show the school in context. Chris uses motion blur to capture people in spaces to create a dynamic photograph and conceal identity.
With all education photography projects, Chris takes a wide range of photographs to show the school / college in context from the outside, together with interior photographs to show the general spaces and highlight nice details.

SCHOOLS PHOTOGRAPHY
Interior Context
As an architectural photographer in Scotland Chris has had the privilege of photographing many of Highland Council's schools in the North. These contemporary schools often have dramatic backdrops and where possible he will include these in the view from classrooms to give context and depth to the photograph. This usually involves taking two exposures and blending them manually to give the perfect exposure for both the internal space and the external view.
This classroom photograph in Lundavra Primary School, Fort William is a good example of how the view has been used to give context to the image
Good interior schools photography isn't just about capturing the wider spaces, but the ability to pick up on well designed details and highlight these. This coat and bag nook in Portree Primary School on the Isle of Skye is one of many in the school with illustrations of neighboring Islands and lochs in the area.
Capturing movement
In architectural photography a space can be brought to life by capturing movement in the shot. This is achieved by using a slow shutter speed of around half a second to allow some movement in the photograph without losing definition of people.
However the 'models' don't always play ball so while you only see one final photograph it often takes several attempts to capture this perfectly and sometimes blending two or more photographs together to create the best composition of motion blur.

External Context
In most schools photography projects Chris aims to capture a range of images from wider context through to small details. An external context photograph is often a good starting point as this sets the scene for the complete set, the above architectural photograph of Portobello High School in Edinburgh shows the white rendered contemporary school set against the darker dramatic backdrop of Arthurs Seat.
